The airport is located in Mthatha. We were welcomed by local dignitaries. The Mayor of Mbashe, Mr Clrr Samkelo.
The ddove for about two hours to arrive into the Mayor's headquarters. Here we were offered a light meal in preparation to our "official" welcoming and community introduction.
The level of protection was very comfortable. I felt very safe and "at home." As a matter of fact, we were so comfortable that we didn't know they were police men. Some were dressed in civilian attire, no guns at sight but very well protected (physique). Watching the caravan drive off was exciting and honorable.
Next, we arrive into the town of Willowvale. A community that is about four hours from the city of Mthatha. We met some of the community leaders and spent some time learning about their experiences.
We learned about the resilience in this community. The wars that took place to deliver them from oppressive governments and trauma. This is of historical significance because if the legacy.
After networking with the female leaders in the community. We are called to a debriefing meeting. All the prestigious leaders, government representatives and headmen gather to discuss the officiating program and discussion.
The delegates from the USA (VACHWA + WM) had an opportunity to share their case. We introduced ourselves. Shared more details about the purpose of visit. Lastly, we presented the gifts we brought. It was a ver solemn and very honorable moment.
Next we moved to the tent where the entire community was waiting. They had been waiting patiently for hours. The formalities of the plenary are very noticeable. The hymns that were song were of celestial delight. I was overjoyed by the experience 😢
Once the headman speaks, the rest of the community becomes quiet. The level of respect is amazing 🤩. The elders of the community blessed the event with prayers and opening remarks.
Then the veterans and other honorable guests on the panel are given the opportunity to speak. The mayor directs the conversation regarding our visit and upcoming events in the community.
Lastly, we are asked to officially introduce the delegation, Stephanie did an amazing job representing us.
The closing remarks and celebratory dances depicted the fellowship and sense of unity. I totally forgot that I was away from home because they “made me feel welcomed and loved.”❤️
The real fellowship happens once we share a meal. I love food, so I couldn’t wait to eat. I wasn’t disappointed, the food was delicious. Obviously, the “itis” hit me right after such a succulent meal. So, I had to take a power nap 😴
Then, the women came to pick us up with chants and more dances. To introduce us to a more intimate conversation. We were given gifts and tribal names. My name is from the tribe of Mdlamina. Wow…I remember now! Poor ladies, I asked them 20 million times to repeat my name 😂
Later that night, we had a little gathering in the meeting room to talk about the impact Community Health Workers have in communities. Here we were able to shine and demonstrate in practical ways their effectiveness. How their impact, even here in Lyahrizo.
Tomorrow is a big day for us...health literacy community members on Health liter
