Day One Summary

Our journey began yesterday, "Saturday," May 13th, at 3 pm. We departed Richmond, VA in high spirits and hopes of adventures and new friendships.

We arrived in Newark, NJ, at 4 pm. Here we enjoyed a meal while waiting on our final connecting flight. The wait was over at 11 pm. We boarded first, thanks to Stephanie's quick thinking.

As we traveled down the runways, I couldn't help but think that up to this point, all that we knew was familiar—the food, music, language, and system navigation. As we continue to embark on this journey, the sense of familiarity is uncovering a new experience in a new continent and culture.
