Wednesday was an exciting day for us as trainers. We were so pleased with the hospitality extended to us, it was our turn to give back!
The youth were ready to learn! We knew this because they were waiting for us in the training center. Prepared with notepads and writing instruments.
We introduced ourselves and exchanged general information about each other. The Association made sure the space was engaging and educational. We brought technology and resources to help us with this project.
The session started with a dialogue about community health. We discussed the importance, individual meaning, and application of health and/or wellness in our communities. Then, moved into health literacy and promotion as a workshop.
The Association focused on four main areas: Diabetes (Sugar in Blood), Hypertension (aka Hihi), Gender Health and First Aid 101
The participants engaged in hands-in experiences to model the learning. In addition to asking insightful questions about the topics.
The facilitation was supported by a delegation of health department officials who enriched the discussion and promoted best practices for the region.
The key takeaways were:
Education
Referral
Community Empowerment
We are grateful to the William and Mary (School of Kinesiology), the Mbashe Municipality and Health Ministry for creating a space for multidisciplinary collaboration and strategic planning. It was our privilege to support your initiatives and community.
